Data and statistics for environmental applications

About me

Hello! My name is Niál and I work on applying data analytics and statistical methods to help tackle environmental problems.

I am currently a PhD student under Dr. Janine Schweier at the Sustainable Forestry research group at the Eidg. Forsch. WSL, based in Switzerland. I am also part of the Environmental Policy Lab at ETH Zürich under Prof. Millie Chapman.

My PhD focuses on developing a multi-objective optimisation algorithm to support precise decision-making in forest management, as part of the EU Horizon project SingleTree. Other research I have undertaken includes biomass estimation from satellite data and modelling air pollution hotspots.

I hold a master’s degree in Statistics from the ETH Zürich and a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics with French from the University of Manchester, so I am comfortable working with data and statistical methods. The ecology and environmental management aspects of my research I learn on the job.
